Specialized Tutoring

Minton Learning Services provides individual teaching for students who experience a learning difficulty or learning difference that is interfering with their ability to do well in school.  Many parents do not understand why their student is struggling in school and may want to try specialized tutoring before considering educational diagnostic testing.  In other cases, your student may have already been diagnosed with a specific learning disability, processing speed difficulty, ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, learning problems related to a head injury, developmental vision problems or sensory integration disorder. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, you may be looking for tutoring that is designed for their specific learning needs.

Tutoring services are available for students of all ages, from early elementary to adult learners. All teaching is individualized and does not use one specific method or approach for all students. A combination of modalities is used that fosters successful learning for each individual student’s strengths and weak areas.

Tutoring is available for learning difficulties in these areas:

Reading:  Development of basic beginning reading skills for elementary school students through advanced academic reading methods for high school and college students, in all language arts classes, social studies, and some science courses

Written Language: Basic written language skills including spelling and writing of sentences, paragraphs, essays, projects and research papers, for students of all ages, elementary to college

Math: Development of foundational math skills for students of all ages, including calculation, concepts and problem-solving

Social Studies and Science: Learning to apply reading and writing abilities to content courses in social studies and science, not including physics and chemistry

Study Skills

Many bright students who are struggling in school benefit from developing new learning strategies and study skills that are useful for all subjects. Individualized teaching is also offered in these critical areas, elementary to adult:

• Time management
• Organizational skills
• Preparing for tests and test-taking skills
• Note-taking methods
• Memory strategies
• Active listening
• Vocabulary building techniques

Specialized tutoring services are available during the school year and the summer.
